Intercostals

  • These two sets of muscles serve opposite functions in breathing

External Intercostals

  • Used primarily for inhalation

  • When they contract, they pull the ribs up and out, causing the rib cage to expand, drawing air into the lungs

Internal Intercostals

  • Used primarily for exhalation

  • When they contract, they pull the ribs down and in, expelling air from the lungs

  • Contraction of the internal intercostals causes the rib cage to contract.
