- These two sets of muscles serve opposite functions
in breathing
External Intercostals

Used primarily for inhalation

When they contract, they pull the ribs up and
out, causing the rib cage to expand, drawing air into the lungs

Internal Intercostals

Used primarily for exhalation
|
 |

When they contract, they pull the ribs down
and in, expelling air from the lungs

Contraction of the internal intercostals causes
the rib cage to contract.
