Lungs

  • Lung tissue is not muscle. It is passive, and does not exert any force
  • Lung tissue is very elastic and extremely porous, allowing oxygen to filter through it into the bloodstream
  • There are an estimated 600 million air sacs in the lungs
  • These air sacs form clusters called lobes
  • The base of the lungs is concave and conforms to the top surface of the diaphragm
  • The lungs are surrounded by a delicate membranous sac called the pleura
