Diaphragm

  • The 2nd largest muscle in the body
  • Divides the chest (thorax) from the abdomen
  • Separates the heart and lungs from the stomach, liver, and spleen
  • Attaches to the ribs, to the sternum in front and the spine in back
  • A double-domed layer of muscle
  • Shaped like an upside-down bowl
  • At its center is a large flat tendon (central tendon) which attaches to the lowest ribs (7-12), sternum, and spine
