About
C. Barry Knisley, PhD.
Professor Emeritus, Department of Biology, Randolph-Macon College, Ashland VA

Personal: I was born and spent my early years in York County, PA, then on to Penn State for a B.S. in Zoology and Entomology. I went directly to graduate school at Rutgers University where I received a Master’s and Ph.D. studying predaceous mites as potential biological control agents for spider mites in apple orchards. I began my 39-year teaching career with a 10-year stint at Franklin College, Indiana, where I taught a variety of biology courses, served as Department Chair, and developed a field biology program. With the opportunity for teaching courses more related to my area of expertise and for pursuing research on tiger beetles, I accepted a position in the biology department at Randolph-Macon College in 1979. My favorite area is the SW U.S. deserts where I have taken students on field trips for 35 years. Much of my research has also been in the southwest. I retired from Randolph-Macon in May 2009, but have an office there and am continuing tiger beetle research.
